WITH ITS EYE-FRIENDLY HUES OF COASTAL COLORS, A WATERSIDE HOME IN NAPLES’ VENETIAN BAY IS AS SMART AS IT IS TRANQUIL
ABOVE: An outdoor living room, dining room, and kitchen sit within a linear waterfront space. Furnishings in this area of the home were chosen for durability and style. The sofa and chairs are made of UV-resistant wicker with cushions covered in Sunbrella fabric, and the coffee table is made of concrete.
A PLACE FOR FAMILY and friends to gather and to put their feet up while enjoying the water views and the Florida sunshine are desires a Pennsylvania couple expressed to Randi Scott of Calusa Bay Design and John Cooney of Stofft Cooney Architects when they began designing their home on Naples’ picture-perfect Venetian Bay. Though the wife relied heavily on these professionals, she was very involved in the project. “She had designed several vacation homes in the past,” Scott explains, “but because she would be working on this larger home from a distance, she wanted more support.”
The homeowner had clear ideas about the finishes and the color palette for the contemporary casual home. “She loved the idea of a neutral background, but wanted the house to have character and pops of color that were not your typical blue tones referencing coastal Florida,” notes Scott. “She had a small piece of artwork she showed me with a beautiful teal tone in it that we incorporated as our main accent color.”
Generously sized outdoor living spaces support the alfresco lifestyle the homeowners imagined for themselves and their two teenage children. While these exterior rooms have an informal flair, the interior architectural envelope is decidedly modern.
The wine niche, tucked beneath a sleek stairway that is inset with glass, illustrates how a bold hue becomes a focal point. “We wanted it to be functional and to make a big statement,” Scott says. “We found a translucent glass panel that we back-lit with an LED panel to make the colors sing.”
“The clients wanted clean lines and sophisticated features but they also wanted the home to have a refined casualness for kicking back and relaxing,” says designer Randi Scott. “Textures and patterns really help make this a curated homage to their personal style and design aesthetic.”
Scott credits Cooney for the fact that the home sits so beautifully on the property with its unusual contours. “It was inspiring to see how he worked with the clients to make sure that all of their needs were fulfilled on the challenging pie-shaped lot,” she explains. “He was very receptive to considering our furniture placement, so the views remained unencumbered.” Scott says that this project was especially satisfying because she felt the client’s excitement build as the momentum picked up and each space came together.
ABOVE: Upon entering the front door to the interiors, the wine niche is to the right of the stairs in the approach to the great room. The cabinetry in the alcove is made of rift-cut white oak, and the wine system was custom-designed and built to the homeowners’ specifications.
ABOVE: Opposite the stairs and the wine niche in the entry is a hammered cast-iron console table in a blackened finish. Hanging above it is a mirror with a frame made of 20 large hand-cut, oxidized-metal discs with textural edges.
ABOVE: The barstools in the kitchen are made of taupe and white rope with teak bases and teal upholstery. The lantern-style pendants have burnished steel frames that clasp slightly convex, hand- poured glass panels.
ABOVE: In the primary bedroom, gray is intermingled with navy blue. The color is introduced in the three-light pendant made of hand-woven gray-washed raffia; the linen bed; the series of round textured wall sculptures above the headboard; and the upholstered ottomans with ribbed, driftwood-finished oak bases.
ABOVE: The mosaic tiles in the shower and behind the bathtub in the master bath illustrate the homeowners’ desire to reflect the colors of the tropics but in a sophisticated way. The pendant is made of two concentric burnished-steel orbs that are hand-forged into eight tapered petals that merge at the sculptural apex.
ABOVE: In the outdoor dining room just off the grilling station and kitchen, the dining chairs placed around a live-edge teak table with powder-coated forged-iron legs are made of rope and teak. The teal color is brought into this space in the lively patterned rug.
BELOW: Sitting at the edge of the pool is a roomy round daybed made of a woven UV- resistant wicker, which will stand the test of weather and time. It’s the perfect place for unwinding, which is the theme of this home in every space, indoors and out.
